Driver licenses must by changed within 30 days of establishing residence
in this area. To change a drivers license. Bring title. If there is a lein on the vehicle,
need leinholder name and current vehicle registration. All parties whose
name appears on the title must be present. Proof of liability insurance
by an insurance company approved in the State of North Carolina must accompany
you. There is a 3% highway use tax which will be charged per vehicle up
to a maximum $150 per vehicle. The maximum dollar amount per vehicle will
be $209 with highway use tax and tags. [When current North Carolina residents

CLIMATE
These high mountains have a mild climate with cool, moderate summers.
Winters are usually fairly cold but not as severe as in the northern states.
Cold spells with snow can be expected on occasion. Prevailing winds are
from the northwest. The average January temperature is 36 degrees and the
average July temperature is 69 degrees. The average length of freeze-free
season ranges from about 165 days through the central part of the area
to 120 days in the higher elevations. Temperature rarely goes above 90
degrees during the summer months. In the winter, 10 degrees to zero weather
can be expected about once every year. Once every two or three years, temperatures
in the range of -10 to -15 can be expected. Rainfall varies somewhat over
the area. The average for the lower agricultural areas is in the range
of 45 to 55 inches per year. Mt Mitchell receives an average of 70 inches

EMPLOYMENT
The current unemployment rate in Yancey County is 4.4% out of a work
force of 6,070. Employed are 5,800. The major local employers are Avondale
Mills (manufacturer of hosiery yarns), Glen Raven Mills (manufacturer of
synthetic woven fabrics), Hickory Springs Mills (manufacturer of innerspring
units), Outboard Marine Corporation (manufacturer of outboard motors).

Application Procedure - Applicant signs written application for membership and pays $5 memberhip fee together with any consumer deposit that may be required by the Cooperative. Tenant/renter, residential shall pay a minimum $45 ($195 for account with electric heat). In lieu of deposit, an approved letter of good credit from the previous supplier of electricity showing prompt payment over the past year may be accepted.
New construction - Service charge for meters installed during working hours - $25; after working hours - $50. Any distance over 1000 feet requires a pay in advance to aid construction for the line extension beyond the first 1000 feet. Also required are right of way easements.
VOTER REGISTRATION
When new Drivers License is issued, the examiner can register for voting;
otherwise, registration can be handled at the Yancey County Courthouse
